Cold Weather Update & Safety Reminders | City of Angleton

Forecasts indicate Brazoria County may avoid the worst winter weather impacts, but dangerous wind chills and extended periods below freezing are expected this weekend into early next week. Even without snow or ice, prolonged cold can create hazardous conditions for people, homes, and infrastructure.

⚑ Power & Utility Preparedness

Extended freezing temperatures can strain power systems. Texas New Mexico Power (TNMP) is monitoring conditions and has crews prepared to respond if outages occur. Residents should register for TNMP outage alerts and power restoration notifications. https://tnmp.com/.../power-outages.../outage-notifications

πŸ”₯ Heater & Generator Safety

Use space heaters safely by keeping them at least three feet away from flammable materials and never leaving them unattended.
Generators must be operated outdoors only, away from doors and windows and 20 feet from the house, to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Never use grills or generators indoors or in garages. Ensure smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly.

πŸš— Travel Safety

Cold temperatures following rain can cause slick roads, especially on bridges, overpasses, sidewalks, and driveways. Residents are urged to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary to protect personal safety and allow first responders to do their jobs safely.

🏠 Protect Your Home

Residents should prepare for freezing temperatures by insulating exposed pipes, covering outdoor faucets, disconnecting hoses, and opening cabinet doors during the coldest hours. Keeping homes adequately heated can help prevent costly pipe damage.

🀝 Check on Others

Extended cold increases risks for seniors, individuals with medical needs, pets, and those without reliable heat. Residents are encouraged to check on neighbors, friends, and family members and ensure they have warmth, food, and necessary medications.

Seniors Cold Weather Post

Preparing Seniors and Neighbors for Cold Weather

Cold weather can pose greater risks for older adults and individuals with medical, mobility, or access needs. Taking time to check on neighbors and help them prepare can prevent emergencies and save lives.

Ways to help seniors and neighbors prepare:
Check that heating systems are working properly and used safely
Ensure they have warm clothing, blankets, food, water, and medications
Confirm emergency contact information is current and easy to access
Help them sign up for local emergency alerts and weather notifications at: https://stear.texas.gov/
STEAR – State of Texas Emergency Assistance Registry
Seniors and individuals with functional or medical needs are encouraged to register with the State of Texas Emergency Assistance Registry (STEAR).
STEAR is a voluntary registry that allows local emergency planners to better understand and plan for assistance needs during disasters.
STEAR may help emergency responders identify residents who:
Rely on electricity for medical equipment
Have mobility, communication, or transportation challenges
Need additional assistance during evacuations or sheltering
Registration does not guarantee services, but it helps emergency officials plan and prioritize resources during emergencies.
During cold weather events:
Check in regularly, especially during freezing temperatures or power outages
Encourage safe heating practices and the use of carbon monoxide detectors
Assist with errands or supplies if travel conditions are unsafe
Prepared communities start with neighbors looking out for one another. A simple check-in can make a meaningful difference during cold weather.
